Mike Ames is the Food Safety and Quality Assurance Manager at Raley’s Family of Fine Stores. Raley’s is an innovative, third-generation family-owned supermarket chain operating 129 stores in Northern California and Nevada, operating under the Raley’s, Bel Air, Nob Hill Foods, Food Source, SAK’nSAVE and Market 5-One-5 banners. Raley’s has a long history of food safety leadership and is passionate about ensuring their customers purchase high-quality, safe and wholesome foods.
Today, Raley’s is championing health and wellness through the creation of Raley’s exclusive Shelf Guide labeling program, as well as other initiatives to improve the overall food system. The company’s vision and purpose is “To infuse life with health and happiness by changing the way we eat, one plate at a time.”
Mike has 29 years of service with Raley’s, and nearly 20 years of retail food safety and compliance experience. Between his two turns with Raley’s Mike worked for NSF International, where he built and managed food safety auditing and consulting programs for a variety of retail clients covering distribution, quick serve, fast casual and food service sectors. Mike has a passion for food safety – and especially so regarding the enhancement of a company’s food safety culture. Mike believes culture starts at the top and works it’s way down to the people doing the work – and only matures when leaders embrace the value of food safety and employees understand the “why’s” that drive food safety policies and procedures.
Mike has training in FSMA, GFSI and HACCP and is an SQF Practitioner and Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI). Mike holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Behavioral Science from National University, which he leverages in developing innovative evaluation tools and intelligent metrics to inform the type of business decisions that get results.
In his spare time, Mike enjoys spending time with family, golf, cooking and travel.
